PAS insists Lunas mess won’t affect by-election

PERMATANG PASIR, Aug 24 – On the last day of campaigning here, PAS leaders said the desertion of a PKR Lunas assemblyman would not affect the by-election here.

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders believe the statement made by Tan Sri Muhyiddin yesterday hinting at the possibility of more PKR leaders and elected representatives quitting the party was aimed at creating insecurity among voters here.

Tomorrow, voters will decide if BN candidate Rohaizat Othman or PAS Penang commissioner Mohd Salleh Man would become Permatang Pasir’s assemblyman.

Its election director PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said the resignation of Mohd Radzhi Salleh won’t have any impact on PR’s campaign effort as it was actually a positive thing.

PR leaders say they received various complaints about Radzhi. The Kedah executive councillor has been accused of corruption and inefficiency by his constituents and was also investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for graft.

“This is a good thing for us. It is a cleaning process for PKR. We can do without a leader like this so I don’t see this issue affecting what is happening here,” Mahfuz told a press conference here.

Radzhi quit PKR to become an independent, citing loss of confidence in the party’s central leadership as his reason.

He would most likely be removed as an exco soon despite insisting his saying he is on good terms with Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abu Bakar.
